Hello all, Here is an odd handmade sterling serving piece. The business end is a round pierced disk. The flat handle is joined to the a notch in the side of the disk with a weak-looking solder joint. The front of the handle is decroated with an applied chain link motif, and the piece is amrked on the back as shown. The signature is probably HCM, with the surname initial being place in the center, but it could be HMC as well. Overall, it seems crudely put together. It looks vaguely Native American to me, but that is just a guess. Does anyone have any similar examles, or a lead on the maker? Thanks! Brent IP: Logged |

The mark doesn't appear in Hallmarks of the Southwest -- not a complete reference, but reasonably comprehensive. The piece doesn't scream Native to me, but I wouldn't rule it out. The piercing work looks rather more nicely done than some other aspects. My first thought would be a student project -- or maybe Renaissance Fair, as has come up here before? IP: Logged |

the decorations look like the suits of hearts and diamonds, I wonder if there may be some connection there to cards or card games? IP: Logged |

Good to hear from you both. The hearts and diamaonds motif had occurred to me as well; I have seen a few pieces of bridge-related silver, so that may have been on the maker's mind. It could well be the work of a student or hobbyist. The handle is flimsy and the attachment to the blade is weak, which says to me "poor design". Any professional would have to be better than this! Thanks again, Brent IP: Logged |
