Forthwith, an image of a bowl purchased by The Newark Museum in 1929, just before the crash changed all the rules. Craftsman in NYC named Peter Mueller Munk (Or Muller Munk with an umlaut over the U).
And here are the marks on this bowl:
He was a highly thought of artist, who showed in Newark in a large exhibition called "Modern American Design in Metal," and subsequently had his work shown at the Metropolitan Museum in NY (hence everyone forgot his show in Newark). IP: Logged |

A very stong piece by a little known craftsman. What is the size? Does the museum have any accompanying information about Mr. Munk? I truly appreciate you showing these gems from the Museum collection. Fred [This message has been edited by FredZ (edited 09-19-2007).] IP: Logged |

I'm with FredZ, a truly wonderful piece with great proportions, well executed. I get the sense it's a fairly large scale? (other) Fred IP: Logged |

Jewel Stern provides some nice details of Muller Munk's career in her catalog for Modernism in American Silver (A must read/must own if you have any interest in American silver design or modernism in general.) He was actually more successful as a designer, though he certainly could and did make some wonderful objects with his own hands. Thanks for sharing this gem. Brent IP: Logged |

I was recently in Detroit, and was startled to see a pair of very large three-light candelabra from 1929 by Peter Muller-Munk--donated to the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1929 by George Booth (one of the founders of Cranbrook). Very German modern, probably 18 inches across. Splendid! They have some great silver scattered around in their 20th century and their European galleries. IP: Logged |
