Over the years we've found many nice silver objects from the company variously called H.E. Potter, Potter Studio, Potter and Mellen, etc. We recently found this strange little tray signed Potter Mellen: with an undulating edge and two stones -- a small bezel-set coral cab in the side and a mother of pearl inlay in the bottom. The thing is small (5-13/16" L and 3-3/4" W and 1-1/2" H) and very heavy for its size (12.6 oz.), and soft. We had it professionally cleaned and polished but it's still much darker than pewter. Does anyone know its function or the alloy? It seems odd that Potter would put stones in something base like this. IP: Logged |

I have seen several pieces made by Horace Potter and stamped Potter Studio made of base metal. He often mounted found objects such as lead decorations and carved stones in brass, copper, and pewter as well as silver. Your tray may be of high lead content and that might account for the color.
