Again, I promise to try to get an image online, but I never think of this when I'm in the office. The Newark Museum was recently given a silver presentation bowl, dated 1954, very much in the Jensenesque style. It was made by Walter Mayer, a silversmith who was clearly part of the NJ-Jensen world along with DeMatteo and LaPaglia. His mark has no letters or words--just an eagle-like crest. I'll see if I can find an image to post. But does anyone know anything about Walter Mayer? He doesn't appear in Rainwater. IP: Logged |

Sorry it is Meyer--and that link is exactly what I needed. The bowl the Museum has been given is just like that--but we also got some molds of small pieces of silver like those used in the motif on the base--which are Meyer designs, I think. The addresses we have for him based on some documents that came with the bowl are in West Orange and in South Orange as well as in Orange. I cannot find out if his shop was truly in his home or he kept a separate workshop. IP: Logged |

The confusion is also with William B. Meyers, a completely different Newark-based silversmith who also worked in a Jensen-esque mode, but also made Judaica. [This message has been edited by Ulysses Dietz (edited 02-22-2008).] IP: Logged |
