I have a spoon that is marked "Spratling Silver". Does it mean that it is not sterling? IP: Logged |

Hi! Are there are other marks? Chances are it is sterling though. Jersey IP: Logged |

William Spratling was the most famous of the Mexican silver entrepreneurs of the early 20th century. An American, he encouraged and promoted the production of silver jewelry in Taxco, Mexico. Anyway, SPRATLING SILVER is defintitly solid silver, possibly of greater purity than sterling. Spratling metalwork is highly sought after, so you have a real prize there. It is worth far more than the metal content. Brent IP: Logged |

Brent is correct, that an authentic piece by William Spratling is worth much more than the intrinsic value of the metal. A word of caution... Forgeries are rampant and the marks on your piece appear to be authentic. Can you show us an image of the entire piece? Fred [This message has been edited by FredZ (edited 05-23-2008).] IP: Logged |

The site SPRATLING SILVER Reference Website is a great resource for Spratling information. IP: Logged |

Paul, This is the definative site for information on Spratling. Phyllis Goddard dedicated a great deal of time to this study and since her death it has been maintained faithfully. The marks would indicate that the spoon was made in the '40s. During the early years many of the Taxco silversmiths used a silver alloy of 950 instead of 925. There is also the aprocaphal but plausible story that much Mexican silver in the 30's thru the 50's was not marked sterling to avoid the luxery tax which would have been collected by US officials. This tax was collected by customs at the border. Sterling and gold were both subject to it. However copper, electroplate and base metals were not. Enough people, in a large variety of places, have told me that they did this to make me believe it. I can remember the luxery tax, it was a bit steep for the times. Has anyone ever heard this? My understanding is that Spratling was primarily a designer and artist, and did not actually make any silver personally. Many famous Mexican silversmiths apprenticed in his taller. IP: Logged |

There was a luxury tax imposed on October 1, 1941 though I have been unable to find any details of what it covered. IP: Logged |
