Above are several wonderful creations of Beatrice Potter in the form of Peter Rabbit, the Tailor of Gloucester and Jemima Puddle-Duck. These replicas have the mark of a company by the name of Hand and Hammer from Woodbridge, Virginia and they were made under license from the Frederick Warne and Co. For those familiar with the life story of Ms. Potter, Frederick Warne was the company that first published her Tale of Peter Rabbit and they continued as her publisher for her next 22 books. Beatrice Potter was engaged to the younger brother of the Warne family, but he died tragically shortly after their engagement. Beatrice Potter's life story is retold in a marvelous movie starring Rene Zellweger. My wife found these figures at the last flea market in Nashville. The above three were the only examples that the dealer at the flea market had, but I suspect that the Hand and Hammer Company made other figures from Ms. Potter's books. Has anyone seen these figures before and know when they 's books. Starting in the late 1940's the Beswick and the Royal Dalton Company made characters from Ms. Potter's books in ceramic material, but I believe they have also stopped production. IP: Logged |
