I wanted to share this small copper dish I have from the Handicraft shop. Made by George Gebelein in 1906. I have always seen Handicraft shop pieces in sterling and this is a first for me. I haven't seen copper by them before or since buying this. I imagine that it's a rarity.
I don't have a shot of the marks at the moment, but it's the same as the sterling pieces you would find, just no sterling mark. IP: Logged |

Hi ashland! Do you have a picture of the marks yet? Have you found out any more about this piece? Jersey IP: Logged |

Handicraft Shop silver pieces weren't all sterling. Here's a coin silver HS ladle (probably by Seth Ek).

Here are some more photos:
According to Margaretha Gebelein Leighton, in her book "George Christian Gebelein / Boston Silversmith 1878-1945," Gebelein used a "simple initial G or sometimes two initials: GG, incised, along with the mark of the Handicraft Shop: H Anvil S...This marking was used through 1908." Gebelein began using the more familiar GEBELEIN mark inside a cut-corner rectangle in 1906. (Leighton's book has a lot of great information both about Gebelein and the Handicraft Shop in general.) Most of Gebelein's work was in silver. This tray is unusual. According to an expert on this fine metalsmith, the copper tray came directly from Bob Gebelein, a son of Ernest Gebelein (Ernest was the oldest of George's sons). IP: Logged |
