[26-0971] Hello everyone - I wanted to share a beautiful little dish that I inherited from my grandmother. I'm pretty sure it's from the Stone workshop, but not the exact date and not whether it was Stone himself or an apprentice. The dish is 4 1/2" in diameter and 2" high.
The engraving shows that the dish was a gift from my grandmother (SMH) and her two sisters (AND and EFH) to a professor of theirs at Radcliffe College, Mary Coes. The dates are the years they graduated - 1895, 1902, and 1905. So I'm guessing that the presentation would have been sometime after 1905. It's so sweet that I'd love to learn more about it, if anyone has any ideas. Thanks! IP: Logged |

The AStone mark is an early one. The hammer is stamped first and the letters are chased in afterwards. I would guess it was made soon after 1905. I suspect that Mr. Stone is responsible for the chased work. It is difficult to say if she raised the bowl himself. It is a wonderful piece and a great heirloom. Arthur Stone was a great craftsman and the fluidity of his chasing is incredible. Thank you for sharing. Fred IP: Logged |

Very nice, indeed! I'd hang on to that one! You don't see the early one's that much. IP: Logged |

Do you know how your grandmother wound up with it if she and her sisters presented it to their professor? Just curious. IP: Logged |

Thank you, Fred and asheland, for your informative and appreciative comments. Don't worry - I intend to hang on to the dish! Polly, that's a great question that I wondered about also. As I understand it, when Mary Coes (the professor) died with no heirs, the dish was given back to the family of the donors. Because my grandmother was the youngest of the sisters and, I think, the only one still living, it ended up in her hands. And that was my good fortune! IP: Logged |
