We recently picked up a fork with the "B" in a cartouch which is attributed to Frank S. Boyden Company, a partnership with Fred Minuth, later known as Boyden-Minuth.

Darling seems to suggest Boyden-Minuth was principally a Jeweler retailing and contracting with other silversmiths. The fork is also marked E. Borsum which Darling attributes to "Eivind Borsum" (1914-23).

The "B" in a cartouch on our fork and on page 103 of Darling are the same. Darling and others say the "B" in a cartouch mark is for Frank S. Boyden Company. We are not so sure because the "B" in a cartouch mark looks more like "B E".

Our fork is only marked with E. Borsum and the "B E" in a cartouch mark. We speculate the "B E" in a cartouch mark belongs to "Eivind Borsum" and not Frank S. Boyden Company.

What does everyone else think?

Sounds like a logical deduction to me. The mark certainly looks like an EB. Do we know anything about Eivind Borsum? What does the fork look like?

If Eivind Borsum made silver for Boyden-Minuth, there is plenty of room for someone to draw the wrong conclusion, and attribute the mark to the wrong party.

Scott,

I believe you have it right on the mark! no pun intended. Great fork!

Eivind Julius Borsum was born in Norway on 4 April 1875. He is listed on the manifest of alien passengers for the SS C G Teitgen which sailed from Christiana, Norway 1 October 1909. The manifest shows that his occupation was opera singer, his last residence was Lillehammer, and his final destination was Chicago, Illinois.

In the 1910 Chicago census, Eivind is listed as a silversmith working for a jewelry company.

Eivind's 1916-17 Draft Registration Card shows him working at the Union Iron Works in San Francisco as a Coppersmith. (He is the third Scandinavian silversmith that I have come across who was employed this way around the time of World War I).
Union Iron Works was involved in shipbuilding.

Eivind is listed in the 1920 census for Chicago as a silversmith. Family members believe he died in 1925.
