We have a somewhat ordinary small bowl:
with this mark:
We've seen this mark elsewhere (one bowl online has additional BROWN and CJJ marks above the New England map). Anyone recognize this? IP: Logged |

By the way, the map seems to have the New Hampshire Old Man of the Mountain profile above the top of the arm. Could this mean it was made in NH? IP: Logged |

Looks like a combination of Maine and New Hampshire with a bit of Vermont thrown in for good measure. IP: Logged |

Massachuetts is there as well, across the bottom, showing the Cape swirling out on the right. IP: Logged |

I suggest this timidly, as you may have already rejected it, but could it be a variant of the Old New England Craftsmen mark? I realize that the Rainwater mark drawing is not exactly like yours, but I did note at least one Internet site attributing your mark to them. IP: Logged |

Taloncrest -- Thanks so much! I think you're right. It's a little awkward but I just found the mark (so crudely drawn I didn't immediately recognize it) on my own website:

Son and father Paul V Brown and Frank V Brown are listed as the president and vice pres-treas silversmiths of Old New England Craftsmen in the 1931 Newburyport Directory and at the same time both gentlemen are listed similarly in the same directory with Brown Jewelry Co which should explain BROWN on the bowl online. That is very interesting for I've never heard of Old New England Crafters. I must ask around to find where they might have been located in Newburyport. middletom IP: Logged |
