David Clarke is a contemporary British silversmith. Using vintage silver and silver-plated flatware and hollowware, he produces beautiful, fascinating, one-of-a-kind objects through techniques of deconstruction, reconstruction, and "upcycling" (a recent term/trend involving the transformation of old or discarded items into objects of greater importance or aesthetic appeal). Here are just some examples:
"Deeperer": reinterpretations of the common spoon. Additional examples and information can be found on his blog (this is not a commercial website). IP: Logged |

These are fun. I love it when the "new" idea hits the street. My gut feeling though is that they could be done better and maybe the next generation will be more substantial. IP: Logged |

Sorry, I beg to differ - this is what I call 'Stupid' art, which seems to have a large following these days [for whatever reason]. IP: Logged |

I applaud David for his playfulness and willingness to stretch the boundaries of what we all feel comfortable. It is vision like this that allows for innovation. The lack of utility is obvious and pushes the object from craft to surrealism. I too would like to see more care taken in crafting some of the seams between the old to the newly fabricated.
