Recently, one of the women who works with the Craft in America organization contacted me to say they are presenting a show in L.A. and San Francisco next year which features veterans who are involved in arts and crafts. She wants Bob Lapham and me to show some things we have made. Some will be ONC pieces we have made and personal pieces of our own design. I'm going to show my communion chalice and a place setting of the Old Newbury pattern I have made for my wife. They have limited space for each individual so that is about all I'll be able to show. I am looking forward to putting my things out there for others to see. Geoff Blake IP: Logged |

Well, here goes. I wrote to the woman at Craft In America to ask just when the show would be, for I hadn't heard from her. She wrote back to thank me for reminding her about the show. That wording should have been my first clue that all was not right. She wrote that the museums which are to hold the show have decided that items to be shown are to be sculptural with no functional pieces to be allowed. So, that pretty much excludes Bob and me. With her reply the woman sent some information about the show which is called Crafts by Soldiers. Apparently airmen and sailors are not allowed. It is also limited to active duty service people, and not veterans as I was told before. The three items shown to me are all anti-military. One is a grouping of ceramic pig faces intended to show the corruption in the service. The others are of a similar tone. I'm glad I'm not a part of such a show. If they feel that ceramic pigs are superior to the work I do, then I'll not be a part of it. We've encountered that attitude before, that functional items are to be viewed as garbage. Some odd sculpture is so superior. Reminds me of the response we got from the ACC. So, I am sorry I got your hopes up, but one can't expect much else from the left coast. Geoff Blake IP: Logged |

We have had a few calls about this.... mostly veterans who are not pleased. IP: Logged |

I heard, today, from the woman who had originally contacted me about the show and she has said that the show in San Francisco has more room and so she may be able to get my chalice included. I would like to counter the tone of what I've been shown about the show, but am still unsure whether I want to participate. I'll let you know what I decide. Geoff Blake IP: Logged |

I have decided to take part in the show, largely, as I said above, to counter the tone of the other exhibits I was shown. I hope this goes well. As I told the Craft in America woman, my chalice is not just a chalice. My wife was unable to conceive so we adopted our son from Korea. To help him to know who he is, we joined a Korean church in our area. As we did not have the funds to give a large sum for the church, I made the communion set as our gift and thank you for the way the church had welcomed us and our son. Geoff Blake IP: Logged |

So, here I am again. I have been contacted by a woman from the museum in San Francisco where the second half of the show will take place. It is the Museum of Craft and Design. The show will be there from the middle of September through to the middle of March of 2016. I young woman from Chloe's school in Maine who is a photographer of art items and jewelry, photographed the chalice for me in a professional way and it appears beautiful, if I do say so myself. I will send a print of the photo along with my application to the museum. So, things are looking up and I am very enthusiastic. The woman from the museum presents herself in a much more positive way than the initial impression I received. Perhaps it was just the Los Angeles folks who were so negative. Geoff Blake IP: Logged |
