Picked up a very nice tea strainer with marked as shown in the title. Don't have time for pics right now but does that ring any bells? It is a hand made vintage American piece. IP: Logged |

The seller of this tea strainer is speculating the maker as Th. Ottosen & Son. quote: IP: Logged |

Thanks Scott, that's the makers mark, but I wouldn't have thought it was Danish. IP: Logged |

I think it is marked zilver and might be what got the seller thinking Denmark. As I recall Zilver is often found on Norwegian silver. Is this what others recall? IP: Logged |

Can be frustrating to attempt identification without a picture of the actual piece - but frankly, would be surprised if the item is other than Japanese, most likely post WWII. The 'SILVER 950' mark is typical of Japanese silver and atypical of American or Scandinavian. Have seen other Japanese marks in a similar lozenge shape several times, including the fairly common 'CPO', often attributed to the U.S. military 'Central Purchasing Office' or the 'Central Processing Organization', used on items sold at PXs and approved for export to the U.S. - it sometimes appears with other maker's marks. The Takano ads shown below, from 1919 and 1920 repectively, were posted on another silver forum - believe they show your maker's mark. A tea strainer with a very similar bowl to the one referenced by Scott was found online, with an Asian floral design handle rather than plain, bearing the 'Asahi Shoten' mark and 'STERLING 950', another very common Japanese mark. Personally, can't recall ever running across 'ZILVER' on any Scandinavian silver... ~Cheryl

Cheryl, Thank so much for the explanation and documentation. That is excellent and thoughtful research.

Hi Scott, not sure I'm seeing where you're finding a Dutch/Norwegian connection - 'zilver' is Dutch for 'silver', can't recall seeing it actually stamped on silver from the Netherlands, but it's possible ('silver' is 'sølv' in both Norway and Denmark). ~Cheryl [This message has been edited by dragonflywink (edited 08-11-2015).] IP: Logged |

I hope to post a pic soon, although mine is distinctly signed Sterling, not 950. IP: Logged |

I keep trying to upload pics to my smp gallery but keep getting request rejected messages. They are 72dpi with the largest size at 630 pixels. I didn't have a problem last time. IP: Logged |

It seems the problems with uploading was because I was using the multiple uploader. When switching to one pic at a time it worked. I know the makers mark seems very similar to the Japanese example posted above but I'm still not sure. [This message has been edited by vathek (edited 08-18-2015).] IP: Logged |

It is Japanese, with a typical plum-blossom motif, the mark is Takano (sans-serif 'T.O' in lozenge) - below is a very similar piece bearing the mark of another Japanese maker, Asahi Shoten, along with 'STERLING 950'... ~Cheryl
