The Appraising Forum sounds fascinating, Gayle. How do you envision its working? IP: Logged |

There are several ways the Appraisal Forum could work: 1) Appraisers can post their appraisal questions - Not so much "What is it worth?", rather "What is it?". Verbal appraisals (which I view Internet appraisals as) are a discouraged practice according to USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice). However, "general" discussions on valuations are acceptable as long as clearly not interpreted as appraisals. 2) Appraisal methodology, as it pertains to silver, could be discussed. For example a discussion of the various market levels (i.e. Retail Replacement Value, Fair Market Value, Marketable Cash Value, Liquidation value, Selvage Value) and how they can affect the value of an item. 3) Suggestions as to how a novice can find a good appraiser, how to prepare for an appraisal, what is required in an appraisal, etc.. 4) Recent IRS cases involving appraisals can be discussed. Some may not pertain directly to silver, but in theory they may be used to support a specific case involving silver. 5) Discussions of regional values. Does a Georgian porringer sell for the same amount in New York as in London? 6) Or start a topic and let's see where it goes! [This message has been edited by Gayle M.
