The mark shown here was used by Matthew Miller of Charleston SC. Miller was born in 1780 and married Rose Ann May on 21 Mar 1805 at the Independent Congregational Circular Church in Charleston. He is listed in city directories as a goldsmith from 1807 to 1816. In 1807, he was working from no. 40 Queens Street and at 326 King Street in 1816. Miller died in 1840. His mark is also found with a bullet rather than a period and generally included the typical pseudohallmarks of a bust, lion passant, and the letter D. I have seen little of this maker's work and then only a few spoons. Does anyone have any other items in their collection? [This message has been edited by wev (edited 10-28-99).] IP: Logged |

I have a countermarked coin with this mark. The coin was also stamped by G. S. Gelston. I have been trying to pinpoint which M. Miller this was. Is there any solid evidence that this is the mark of the silversmith from Charleston? Bob M.

I also have two images of a different "M. MILLER." mark. It has a final period and three pseudo hallmarks. If anyone wants to see the images, just let me know. Bob M. IP: Logged |
