I recently acquired a salt spoon with this maker's mark.

I have, in the last few years, found two teaspoons and a placespoon with the same apparent maker's mark, but have had no luck putting a name to it. All the pieces are related in design and mark placement, the only variation being a pair of eagle marks flanking the 'S' on the teaspoons. The mark is not recorded in Winterthur's files, nor any of the standard references. Has anyone out there run across it?

Another contribution from the cobweb corner:
Langdon gives this mark to George Spanenberg (1845-1870) of Kingston, Ontario.

Interesting, but unless he was working a good bit earlier than 1845, I doubt the attribution. The pieces I have are c 1820, perhaps a bit earlier, and I would wonder about a Canadian maker using flanking federal eagles with his mark.

Interesting, as you say. The salt spoon you illustrate is consistent with the stated time period and looks English/Canadian in style. Langdon's "Guide" (not his larger book) has photos of 3 variants: The "S" (a large image identical to your photo) flanked by two devices that look like they might be imitations of the soverign's head; a second with two devices I cannot make out; and a third with the "S" accompanied by KINGSTON. Check it out. I have never seen a silver mark book without some sort of error - easy to make with a subject this arcane - but I cannot think of another reason for the KINGSTON mark. Maybe he emigrated from the US?

Could there be another explanation for the one with the eagle marks? Care to post an image of the mark and the spoon?
