I am interested in learning about a late 18th Century NY silversmith named Silas White, and also finding out if there is anyway to find samples of his work. Any guidance on how to proceed would be appreciated. IP: Logged |

Silas White is pretty well documented, being mentioned in a number of books on American silver (according to Kovel's American Silver Marks). Unfortunately, the only book I have personally is Ensko, and Ensko doesn't illustrate many pieces of silver. Ensko says that White lived from 1754-1798, had a shop at Great Dock Street and later moved to 43 Roosevelt Street, where he worked from 1792 to 1794. For more information on White, you might try contacting the Museum of the City of New York, or possibly the New York State Historical Society. I don't know of any collections that include pieces of White's work, but I'm sure there are some out there in public collections. I will dig around and see what I can find. Brent IP: Logged |
