I've seen this name on a wide variety of stuff. Was it a department store or was Arnold a retailer of some sort? IP: Logged |

There are no known silversmiths named William Arnold, as far as I can tell. I see from your profile that you are from Michigan. Arnold may well have been a local retailer; check old business directories or historical societies for more information. This would make sense, as antiques often pop-up near where they were first sold. On the other hand, midwestern coin silver manufacturers are largely undocumented. There was one Master's thesis on Michigan silver at Wayne State University which I have seen (briefly). Otherwise, not much information is out there. What do the marks look like? If they are on pieces with other trademarks, then Arnold probably was a retailer. If the name mark is the only mark, Arnold may have been an actual producer. Let me know; Midwestern silver is an interest of mine. IP: Logged |

I have since found out that Arnold owned a jewelry store in Ann Arbor and was at that location for quite a while. He apparently marked a lot of pieces with his stamp, as the piece I have is a Durgin sterling beaker. Of course, this reiterates the interest of retailers marks on silver. IP: Logged |

Old post. Incidently, William's jewelry business in Ann Arbor spanned six decades. William immigrated from Württemberg in 1873 at 24 years of age. It looks like William might have made his way from Germany to the U S via Greenock, Scotland where he was working as a watchmaker in 1871. IP: Logged |
