I'm just curious about what people might have seen by Henry C. Priest. As I've learned from Don Soeffing and Joe Hammond over the years, Priest was a spoonmaker in Newark, and used pseudo-hallmarks for spoons sold by various other silversmiths and retailers. THe Newark Museum has just been given four teaspoons and four forks, all marked "H.C.P. Newark, N.J." They're nicely engraved and twist-shafted; typical of the time but unlike any Newark flatware I'd ever seen. Has anyone else examples of Priest's work they'd like to share? IP: Logged |

Hi, Just today I picked up a group of three Newark coin teaspoons, one of which has the same H.C.P. Newark.N.J. mark you describe. It is a rather nondescript front-tipped fiddle, with a worn die-struck shell on the back of the bowl. The other two spoons are a Henry Evans, back tipped with an intaglio mark, and a finless-fiddle by B. Cleveland. I will try to post pictures at some point. Brent IP: Logged |

Here are the three Newark, NJ spoons mentioned above. The uppper one is by Priest, the middle by Henry Evans, and the lower one by B. Cleveland. The first two have similar die-struck shells on the backs of the bowls (very rubbed, unfortunately). The Cleveland spoon is a bit smaller and earlier. Would it be possible for you to post images of the pseudohallmarks of Henry Priest and the twisted flatware you mentioned? IP: Logged |

In case this is not already readily available information, here's just a few things about Henry C Priest: He was born in England in about 1808. He is listed in the 1850 U S Federal Census for Newark, New Jersey as a silversmith. Judging by the age of his eldest child who was born in New Jersey, Henry might have been in this country and working in his trade by somewhere around the mid 1830's. IP: Logged |
