The marketplace dull and my pocketbook thin, I have been spending some time researching the family trees of various New England silversmiths represented in my collection. I began with members of the Ward family - Bilious (!), James, William, etc. and then on to Miles Beach, Roswell Bartholomew, Caleb Warner, and others working in the Hartford/Guildford/ Lichfield area. And I found something interesting: we should all, if we have a passion for their silver, be ever thankful that Andrew Ward had a safe journey from Suffolk England to the wilds of Connecticut in 1609. He is the direct common ancestor of the Wards various, Samuel Parmelee, Roswell Bartholomew, and Miles Beach. I suppose, given the narrow population, this should be no great surprise, but think of what would be lost to us if his ship had floundered or a certain Miss Hester Sherman had turned up her nose at his pro-offered nosegay of forest violets on a warm summer night c 1618. Okay, that last bit is whimsey, but it could of! Cheers to all on this happy Fourth! wev IP: Logged |

Well, the market is a bit more interesting, but my pocketbook is still woefully thin, so I have been continuing my assemblage of a New England silvermakers family tree. I now have 15,137 individuals in 1436 families that link in a single tree, by blood or marriage, 113 silversmiths working in New England between 1690 and 1850 (see list below). This is getting very addictive and has lead to all sorts of interesting connections. Did you know that John Coddington was the nephew of Benjamin Franklin and possibly made the silver porringers he laments the expense and pretense of in his biography? I have now started a new tree that links masters with their known apprentices, which may produce its own surprises. (I would be grateful to anyone who can supply scans of the marks from their collection for any makers on the list not marked with an asterisk) Name (Last, Given) Birth Date - Death Date Any readers that might be interested in further information on one or any of the smiths may contact me by email and I will be hapy to share what I have. Lovely -- I have not seen that mark before; Belden does not list it nor any mention of Miles Jr. Miles Gorham (1747-1847) did have a son named Miles (1782-1824), but I had seen no record that he followed his father's trade. This is quite exciting and I thank you for bringing it to my attention. Could you give a scan of the whole piece? IP: Logged |

Dear WEV, I'm descended from Zebul & Gustavus Bradley and have some information, including and interesting letter by Gustavus, but would like to know what information you might have about them. Perhaps we could bolster each others files. Thanks, Richard IP: Logged |
