Yesterday I bought a beautiful coin silver spoon with a the maker's name A.L. Spear. So far, no luck in identifying same in my books. Any ideas? (It's of the 19th century style)

At first glance I don't find a listing for A. L. Spear. Can you post a scan of the mark, or short of that, a description of it? Is the mark incised or incuse? Are there any additional marks? What is the style of the spoon?

I have 2 A.L. Spear pieces, and have the same questions. Both marks are incised. Based on the number of pieces with this mark that I have seen, I would guess that Spear was actually a manufacturer, not just a retailer, although the mark looks like a retailer's stamp.

Both of my pieces, a teaspoon and a right-angle butter, are plain rounded forms with nice engraved designs on the front. I have not seen any die-stamped pattern pieces with this mark.

I'd love to know who he was. The only Spears that are listed seem to be Southern.

Scratch my earlier comment; I just saw a double die-stamped spoon by A.L. Spear. The pattern was a handsome Olive variation that was unlike any other I have seen.

Alexander L Spear was a jeweler who was born in about 1826 in Maryland. He is in the census's and directory in Baltimore at least up to 1890.

Just a "small" detail, an Alexander L. Spear married Mary J. Rulon on 3 Sep 1849 in Baltimore, Maryland. The census's do show this gentleman married to a Mary J.
