I have a fork which is a mystery. Very nice engraving but simply stamped COIN on the back. Could not get a good scan of the stamp. IP: Logged |

You have a very nice example of an early sardine fork. These forks were used to serve tinned sardines, and took a variety of interesting forms. Your fork probably dates from the 1850s or early 1860's, when the craze for sardines was beginning to grow. Determining the maker of your piece would be very difficult, as the "Fiddle Thread" pattern was very popular with manufacturers. It could well be from a Philadelphia manufacturer, but that would just be a guess. The latest Silver magazine has a nice article on sardine forks, if you wish to learn more. Their web site is www.silvermag.com. IP: Logged |
