Does anyone have information on a maker named Jost working in NY around 1800? I have been offered a piece of jewelry and cannot find him in any of my references. Thanks for any and all help. Melissa

Is there any further information you can provide about the piece of jewelry you were offered, such as its design characteristics, construction techniques, findings, etc.? Also, is "Jost" the only marking on the piece of jewelry? Is the mark complete (or has a part of it worn away)?

Hello. The piece is marked JOST
NY

in a conforming cartouche, the 'J' being badly rubbed and the 'N' all but invisible.
It is very lightweight coin silver. Roughly triangular in shape, it is ~1-3/4" high and 1-1/2" at it's widest point. (At first glance I thought it was a Mason's jewel, the compass.) The center is open, with a free moving arm like a buckle; however, the weight precludes this from being anything but decorative. There are radom 'bullets' scattered over the piece.

The seller says he was told it was made for the Native American trade as a goodwill piece or to trade for pelts, it is an earring broach (?). As I know less than nothing on the subject, I am hoping someone here would have information. I appreciate the help.

Martha Hamilton's "Silver in the Fur Trade", which is the definitive source on the subject, lists Jost NY as a mark found on quality modern reproductions of Trade silver, probably made 1970-1980. Winterthur apparently analyzed a number of pieces with this mark and found them to be made of modern silver alloy. So, unless the price is for a modern reproduction, do not buy this piece!
