The spoon shown here was recently offer on ebay (it did not sell). The description given was, to its credit, cautionary. What do you think? It reminds me of the children's game what's wrong with this picture? IP: Logged |

Two things strike me about this immediately. One, the shape of the bowl is just wrong. I have never seen a piece of coin silver with a bowl of this shape. Most coffin-end spoons have a narrower, egg-shaped bowl. Secondly, the close up of the mark makes the piece look like a casting. There is no crispness to the mark at all, and the handle itself looks rather thick and blobby. Authentic coffin-ends are usually rather thin, with crisp edges. IP: Logged |

It does look cast--but if it isn't, perhaps the mark comes from what's described in this older post: Counterfeit diestamps -- Does each one come with a blank spoon? IP: Logged |

Paul, Good catch! I knew that mark looked familar. Here are the counterfeit diestamps from the other post entitled Counterfeit diestamps -- Does each one come with a blank spoon?
