I have just received a spoon sold as a William Rogers which is marked with an eagle facing his left, W? Rogers in a rectangle, and six pointed star. I cant tell if the second letter is lower case and above the main printing (as shown in Ensko et al. for this smith) The seller claims the six pointed star indicated coin silver whereas five pointed stars indicate SP. For this reason I bought the spoon but haven't taken the time to check out this theory with my own spoons (have serious doubts about it). However the eagle in the illustrations in Rainwater and elsewhere looks to his right and the stars are five pointed. Otherwise the spoon looks very authentic to me. So any comments? IP: Logged |

I think that Rogers, Junior and Senior, used a multiplicity of marks over their long career, both for coin and for plate. I have often seen flatware marked coin that is obviously plate and vice-versa, in shops. I doubt there is any hard and fast rule - or chronology - for the various marks and their use. I suspect there hasn't been a complete set recorded; at least I haven't seen one. I had not seen or heard of the 6 point star and its designation before. Belden only shows a five pointed star and a right facing eagle. I did a quick check of my Rogers pieces. One is a narrow fiddleback teaspoon with tiny pointed shoulders and a long spade drop; it is marked [eagle] [WM ROGERS] [eagle], with the M superscript. Two are salt spoons, fiddleback with flared shoulders and no drops; they are marked [eagle] [WM ROGERS] [star], with the M subscript. The last is a sugar spoon, wide fiddleback and a long sugarloaf shoulder marked [star] [WM ROGERS] [star], again sunscript M. In addition I have a pair of tablespoons, quite heavy gauge with fiddleback handles, short square shoulders, and applied crescent drops marked [eagle] [WM ROGERS Jr.] [eagle]. All the eagles face right. I'm sure other readers can supply another half a dozen variations or more. [This message has been edited by wev (edited 04-20-2001).] IP: Logged |
