We purchased this spoon recently in Portsmouth, NH. The maker, "GM" is one which I have been unable to identify. Length is 8" and it has good weight. We think it dates to mid 18th cent. Any information as to the maker would be greatly appreciated.

A handsome spoon and I agree with your dating. I am afraid I don't see any maker's using this mark in my references. There were two strong Binet family lines that I know of in the mid to late 18th century, one centered in Quebec and one in the Boston area (Loyalists vs Royalists?) which might be an indication of the place of origin.

Here is an entirely different possibility. Jackson records an unidentified maker in the Channel Islands using a very similar mark in the mid 1700s. There were also Binet families there as early as the 16th century. I have noted the same molded drop on a number of English spoons of the period, so it's worth some further research, I think.

Hello to all. In Mayne's "Channel Islands Silver" that particular GM mark is asssigned to George Mauger, son of Thomas and Marie LeDain Mauger, bapitsed 12 February 1750. Working in Jersey ca 1770-1823. Congratulations on a great find.

Thanks Melissa -- my English references are woefully inadequate. I hope you'll register soon and continue your good posts.

Bravo to WEV and Melissa, fast response, and in an area I would never have dreamed of. Is the reference available, or an excerpt? I sense from Melissa that this may be an uncommon maker ? Many, many, thanks. Graeme

Hello all, there is a copy of the Channel Island book for sale (Buy-It-Now) on eBay, #1442496396 for $38. That is about the going rate, I purchased mine in England for approximately that. Handy to have around.
