Does anyone know anything about either of these dealer's marks? "R. S. Mershon" which goes with the fork and "B. Schulte" with the spoon. Both are incised. Thanks! IP: Logged |

Are your pieces American or European? Are there any other marks on your flatware? Those names are not familiar to me and are possibly European rather than American. IP: Logged |

The pieces are both definately American (I've seen the scans which we are trying to get on to the original post). The Mershon fork is also marked 'coin' and the Schulte spoon has interesting pseudo-hallmarks with a Philadelphia favor. I have seen the Mershon mark on a number of spoons in a variety of styles, with and without additional marks, but have not run across any references to him. Hello to all. The arrow mark is identical to the one assigned as the mark Of Schohay, Ludwig & Co. of Philadelphia (Silver Magazine, March/April 1998, pp 38-40); however, I don't recognize any of the other marks. S L & Co. were first listed in May of 1867 as Albert Schohay and Adolph Ludwig and continued being listed until about 1872. That's my best guess. IP: Logged |

Thanks to everyone! I'm waiting for an Ensko book due to arrive soon so maybe I won't be in the dark quite as much. Richard ------------------ IP: Logged |

Ralph S Mershon was a New Jersey born watchmaker and jeweler. In 1860 he was working in Philadelphia. In 1870 he was working in Zanesville, Ohio and in 1900 he was still in Zanesville and retired. IP: Logged |
