I have a ladle which I have been trying to identify for two years: silver makers mark FGH with a crown to the left. Lightly beaded on the reverse of the handle are "F.C.H." and "P.E.H." (script captial) dated 1806. Handle with bright-cut beaded edge and wheat motif (relates to Neoclassical style) obverse. Split handled and to bowl on back and foliated branch mount on obverse. Bowl with raised and flairing molded edge. Length 13 inches. Thanks for any info anyone can give. IP: Logged |

I get a feeling, from your description, that the ladle might be Germanic or Nordic in origin. By 'beading' of the monograms, did you mean pricked or stippled, rather than cut cut with a clean line? This would be in keeping with Northern Europe. Any chance of a picture? If you can't post one, you could register and then email one to me. IP: Logged |

To WEV - Actually the makers mark is FCH (I typoed) and the two beaded scripts are on the back of the handle, under the makers marks, they are not monogramed on the front. They are so light than one can barely see them in bright light and would never show in a photo. I'm thinking possibly he made them for his marriage, inasmuch as one of the beaded initials sets are his makers initials. Sorry for the confusion and thank you so much for the reply. IP: Logged |

I agree, it sure sounds German, or at least northern European, to me. IP: Logged |
