Here is a new mystery maker wanting a name. As can be seen, the eagle's head and shield mark appears on a number of early patterns, with and without a retailer's counter-mark. Can anyone offer an identity? Or post any additional patterns/examples? a teaspoon: on several table/soup spoons: and a varient of the above: on a set of 12 ice cream spoons: and finally, on a set of tea and tablespoons: wev IP: Logged |

There was a discussion a while back regarding the marks of James Watts and possible variations, including the animal head over a star in shield mark. At that time I posted a fish (?) knife with this symbol and 'coin'. IP: Logged |

Thank you; I knew I had seen a reference, but couldn't put my finger on it. Here is the link to that thread: wev IP: Logged |

I believe this mark to be that of either James P. Butler, or the firm of Butler & McCarty. This Butler's first name, according to Don Soeffing (in his biographies toward the end of the book Silver In America by Venable), was Franklin, and he was listed in directories as a jeweler/watchmaker. Edward McCarty was the silversmith. Both firms were Philadelphian, as was Watts'. There was a partnership of "Watts & Butler" ca. 1859-62, so the standard Watts marks and this one are probably at least professionally related. WEV, can you find any records of intermarriage between the Butler and Watts families? IP: Logged |

The U. S. Federal Census's indicates that James Watts was born in Ireland in about 1813. James's wife Julia was born in Germany. James and Julia were married for at least thirty years. Franklin Butler was born in Connecticut and his wife was born in Delaware. This of course only means that James didn't marry a Butler and vice versa. Here's an interesting partial enumeration from the 1850 U. S. Federal Census for Pennsylvania, Philadelphia County, Lower Delaware Ward:
