Zebul Bradley was my GGGG grandfather. I have two of his spoons, both made for his famuily and with the mark "Z.Bradley", Neither of them have pseudo hallmarks. If you'd like scans of the spoons, let me know.

Yes, please. Do you have an estimate of the date? He used three marks that I am aware of and it would be interesting to order them. Bradley had both an apprenticeship and early career with Marcus Merriman and, apparently, did not go out on his own until the mid 1830s, yet I have seen work with his mark alone that easily pre-dates (by style) the end of Merriman & Bradley partnership. The earliest piece I have seen is a narrow fiddleback place spoon with what might be best termed proto-shoulders and marked Z. BRADLEY in a fully serrated rectangle. IP: Logged |

In the 1846 New Haven City Directory Zebul's son Gustavus is back at his father's 62 State Street address. It is kind of interesting to see the watchmaker William T Pratt in close proximity to Zebul Bradley who is listed as a jeweler in the 1850 U S Federal Census for New Haven, Connecticut. And not far from those two William Barnes a silver plater is to be found. Oh well, the list of those kinds of people probably ends in New Haven when the census ends.
