Here is a spoon we picked up which is marked Josiah Gooding. The photo doesn't show the lowercase g at the end of Gooding but with a loop you can make it out. Also there is a mark that at first glance one would think it was a city mark but closer inspection shows that it says Joy's Building. Have you seen this before? What is the story?

I have seen a few spoons marked like this. Joy's Building was located at no 77 Washington Street, Boston, built on the site of the original First Congregational Church. It housed offices and studios and I have found listings at that address for printers, jewelers, silversmiths, stationers and papermakers, daguerreotypers, and painters, etc. I'll see if I can dig up a picture of the place and a bit of history. In the Boston Almanac, 1852, Josiah Gooding is listed as a jeweler at 83 Washington Street. Belden notes that he is listed in Boston directories (variously as a watchmaker, jeweler, and silver maker)from 1818 to 1856. A Henry Gooding, also listed as a jeweler and watchmaker, was working at 12 State Street, but I don't know what relation he was, if any, to Josiah.
