The above image shows the extra, larger elephant mark which appears on certain [eagle] [U] [shield] Bailey pieces. It seems to correspond to the larger lion passant guardant on Bailey's sterling pieces. Why the elephant?? If Bailey wanted to emphasize the American coin standard, why not choose an American animal?
