Prince Albert

Who made this? Cox or Gibney?
The date is 1844.
Do you have Prince Albert pattern older than 1844? If you do have a piece older than 1844 is it English or American?

I'm not sure who made this spoon either, but this examples gives us a comparison. While Scott's has a "C" in the circle between MG and the year and an "A" below it, mine has an "X" and a "C." I expect these were some sort of journeyman's marks, telling Gibney (or the Coxes) the employee who actually made the spoons. If I had to guess, I'd say Gibney's shop was the manufacturer.

I like Trefid's explanation of the marks.
It has also been suggested that the additional Gibney marks were a month/day dating convention.
Maybe one of the marks was the month and the other a journeyman's marks?

Hi --

I have a Prince Albert table spoon
with both Michael Gibney's marks and
those of Ball, Tompkins & Black.
That, together with the markings on your
spoon, suggests that Michael Gibney is
the maker.

I have a soup ladle in this pattern marked J & W Moir in a rectangle cartouche which of course does nothing to indicate anything earlier than 1844, just thought it might be interesting.
