As you may be well aware, William Fitzhugh's will delt with 58 pieces of substantial piece of silver. I have no record of what these items were. According to George Cutten there is mention of it M.N. Standard's book "Colonial Virginia, It's Peeople & Customs" on page 100. Good luck in your search... I assume you are related? IP: Logged |

I can do no better than second Fred's direction, but I could not resist passing this on as well: In 1681 Fitzhugh wrote to his London agent: "I would have a feather bed & furniture, curtains & vallens. The furniture, etc, I would have new, but the bed second hand, because I am informed new ones are full of dust." and, more to the point, in 1688: "I esteem it as well politic as reputable, to furnish my self with an handsome Cupboard of plate which gives my self the present use & Credit, is a sure friend at a dead lift, without much loss, or is a certain portion for a Child after my decease..." From the Genealogies of Virginia Families from the William and Mary College Quarterly. Vol. I. Adams-Clopton page 174, William Fitzhugh's list of silver may have looked, quantity and quality not withstanding, something like the following: one large silver punch bowl, silver ladle, silver spoons, two silver tankards, one of them holding a pottle, the other something more; one small silver tankard, four silver tumblers, one large silver plate, two silver candlesticks, one silver caudle cup, two silver castors, two dozen silver spoons, and five silvers salts. This list came from a deed recorded at Farifax Courthouse, dated April 1, 1752. The deed itself was dated March 31, 1731 and was written by Colonial Henry Ashton. (The Ashton Plantation bordered the lands of the Fitzhughs). IP: Logged |
