Has anyone out there seen a mark for the short lived partnership of Ephraim Brasher and Geo. Alexander which was dissolved in 1801? I have a spoon with the same set of marks as those attributed to Aitken & Brown of Baltimore on page 175 in the Maryland silver book . However, Belden attributes that particular EB mark (the one on the left, since they appear to be different) to Brasher. I'm wondering if this set of "EB" & "GA" marks is actually for Brasher & Alexander. Thanks! ------------------ IP: Logged |

I agree with you, this is the mark for that short lived partnership, based on the Brasher mark. I have a teaspoon with the EB and GA mark, and a serving spoon marked with the same EB mark and BRASHER. IP: Logged |

Thanks Melissa! Your spoon with the "EB" and "Brasher" marks was the missing clue for this little mystery. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Hello REB and all, while reading von Khrum's Silversmiths of New York City 1684-1850, I thought I'd pass these tidbits on B&A..George Alexander, silversmith and jeweler. Notice of death, 29th year, The New York Gazetteer and General Advertiser, April 20, 1801. Brasher & Alexander, 1800, 350 Pearl Gold and silversmiths. Partnership dissolved, American Citizen and General Advertizer, February 21, 1801. Now a question of my own. Some years ago, perhaps as many as 15, 'Coin World' did an article on Brasher. When I went looking for my copy it had disappeared, probably lost in moving. Does anyone have a copy? This particular article emphasized his work as a gold and silversmith, rather than as a minter of coins. I have contacted the paper but have had no luck in getting a copy of that particular article, and I would dearly love to have it again. Anyone out there have one? Thanks for looking! IP: Logged |
