Just back from a new found junk store, found 3 more coin spoons, 2 the same maker with "Fiddle (tipped) and Wings" they are stamped with "W. Pitkin" and also "W. M. & J. W. Root".

I have found a "Walter Pitkin", brother of "J. O. Pitkin" partners 1820 - 1840, when Walter went on his own, but no reference to teaming with "W.M. & J.W. Root" any ideas...?

I did find a slight ref. to a "Washington Root" Partnered with "Fredrick Chaffee" around 1850, could this be the same...?

The other "Fiddle (no tipped) Wings" This one is marked "H. Towle". I have found many references to the "Towle" name with many initials, but never an "H. Towle"... another conundrum any thoughts

The former ones seem to be a bit heaver that the last one, but neither are as heavy as the "Klein and Brother" I asked about last week.

Thanks Ken and Lisa

The W. M. Root is undoubtably Washington McDonough Root of ROOT & CHAFFEE, who also was also partner to his brother Laurence Root. I don't find any mention of a J. W. Root, however, and no one in their family line with those initials. Could you provide a picture?

Walter Pitkins' mark is often found in conjunction with other makers and retailers.

Don't know who H. Towle is, but the family in Newburyport had many branches, including that which lead to Towle Silversmiths, so it may be a related smith or retailer.

Hello! Flynt & Fales' book 'Heritage Foundation Collection of Silver' lists Henry Towle in Haverhill, NH 1788-1867. They go on to say "Son of Simon and Eleanor (Hall) Towle. Shop at Main St. in Haverhill to which he came in 1805. Died in Haverhill, Mar. 28, 1867.

Looks good to me!

I have had a chance to do a bit more digging on the family of Henry Towle. He married, in 1815, Susan Pierce of Haverhill NH; in 1827 they were blessed with a daughter, Marie Antoinette Towle. She in turn married Horace Hunt of Bath NH in 1852. They had 6 children, including Marie Antoinette Hunt in 1864. Through the maternal and paternal lines, Miss Hunt and her siblings are related to a whopping 221 silversmiths.

Did Towle Silversmiiths ever do a version of Marie Antoinette? It would seem appropriate.

I checked our SMP Book of Silver flatware pattern name index for Marie Antoinette and found nothing listed for Towle.

WOW!.. Thanks for the info... I am happy that some addition to the Knowledge base (Towle Family Tree) was in some small part related to one of my finds... I will keep looking... I am still puzzelled with the "Klein & Brother" spoon... I will spend the weekend at the Library (in the Stacks reference books---Real Books, Dust, Bad Light, Funny looks from the computer types, you know the real fun stuff...:-)

James H Towle the second son of Henry and Susan (Pierce) Towle was born in New Hampshire in about 1820. He was a clerk in his father's store and afterwards engaged in business in New York City. Later he joined the firm of Fellows & Co on Maiden Lane for a number of years.
