This was the first spoon I purchased approx. 12yrs ago at an antique dealer's for less than a dollar. The mark was filled with dirt and grease and it took careful cleaning to make out the C.B in the deep impression. I later acquired the Cleveland Museum Silver Collection Catalogue and they have a similarly engraved spoon by Beal including the foliated scroll on the back of the bowl. My collection exceeds 500 spoons now. They have been great learning tools. I will slowly trade or sell those that no longer interest me. I have long ago given up the idea that I could have the ultimate collection of every mark. If you will allow me I will share the more interesting ones with the forum. Many are easily accessible during meals and we often use them when serving vegetables or eating ice-cream. Fred

Nice piece, Fred! I see you are enjoying the new camera. As for the spoon, it is a nice example of federal period bright-cutting. This style of spoon was just becoming popular around the time of the Revolution, so some pieces like this are as early as the 1770's. This kind of work dies out around 1800, replaced with very restrained engraving, if any. The foliate scroll bowl back is a feature mainly found in Boston spoons, though as with all rules there are many exceptions. Thanks for sharing1 Brent IP: Logged |
