Bought a pig in a poke... From California no less… a box of coin silver, 24 pieces for less that $5.00 each, most common, several nice ones, and one that I hope may be correct...

Standard Coin silver 1810-1820 styling (tiny wings, turned back and down, square handle, no tipped)... Appears to have been used as a teething item for a small child... Tooth damage to the bowl front half, and end of handle indicative of a small child chewing on it... Monogrammed (Bright cut) "AP" very nicely done...

Here's the hope as it were, it is marked "LYON" in a citrated rectangle...

I have only been able to come up with one. That one is from Cutten’s book on North Carolina Silversmiths where there are no known examples, as he was murdered in Charleston SC early in his working life. I suppose that would have reduced his artistic output to a fairly small quantity.

I have dropped the piece off with the NC Museum of History, and they are trying to verify its validity... If they feel it maybe correct, Mrs. Peacock will be brought in to verify it (in her opinion), and I will get a wonderful opportunity to spend an afternoon with a Real Southern Lady… Lucky me!

I will send pictures as soon as I have an opportunity...,

Has anyone got a reference to a "Lyon" makers mark from any other source... I have checked all my books and have found none...

Thanks "Smaug"...

I found Asbury Kent Lyon documented in Silversmiths of Kentucky 1785-1900. He was listed in the 1870 census for Lexington as a watchmaker, age 22 and a native of Ohio. The 1887 Lexington directory lists him as a dealer in silver and plated ware among other things.

In the 1910 U S Federal Census for Lexington, Kentucky, there is an Asbury Kent Lyon who is in his seventies and working as a jeweler. Asbury was the son of a painter by the name of James M Lyon who was born in Maryland in 1811.

Doggett's New York City Directory lists a jeweller by the name of Lyon living there in 1850.

The U S Federal Census for New York, New York lists an Abraham Lyon who was born in Germany in 1790 and was a jeweller. The same census also lists an Abraham Lyon who was born in Poland in 1800 and was a jeweller.

Is it possible to post a photo?
Shape and style of the device used to enclose the mark such as rectangle, square, banner, circle, oval etc. and whether barbed or not. Letter size, style with or without pellet/period etc. Are there extra devices. These are all indicators used to help determine maker. There are multiple initial type marks which use the same letters and identical or nearly identical full name marks but are differentiated by the letter style and or enclosure.
