Ending a long dry spell, I bought a nice serving spoon yesterday at the local Salvation Army. It is standard form c 1820: a medium weight narrow fiddleback with small square shoulders. The mark is unknown to me; does anyone recognize it?

Looks like I can post an answer to my own question through the courtesy of Winterthur. The mark is attributed to Thomas Furber (1799-1841), working c 1820 in Boston. His wife, Sophia Munroe, was 1st cousin to the silversmith brothers John and Nathaniel Munroe. IP: Logged |

Very cool mark. This mark looks like it could/should be the most recent. When did this mark first get used? Do you think there were other (older) marks or variations? IP: Logged |

It is nice, isn't it? Reminds me a bit of Hequembourgh's leaf/H/leaf. Apparently this was Furber's only mark, but I am still checking. IP: Logged |

I've had some further information from Winterthur on Furber's marks. He did have a second TF incised in a tight rectangular cartouche. It is hard to determine which mark was used first or if they were used interchangeably. Winterthur has an example of both marks; the first has the mark I posted and is firmly dated 1827-1828. The second is a desert spoon identical in form to my tablespoon, but with the TF mark and dated c 1825-1830. I will see about getting permission to post the second mark. IP: Logged |
