The Inn on Bellevue in Newport RI says in its web site: "The Inn was built in 1891 as the home of William Fludder, a well known silversmith." I find no notice of him in my books, but I do not have anything specifically on Rhode Island or Newport. I did tracked down his obit (7 April 1900, at age 96) which notes that he was a mason (the profession, not the society), prosperous, and well known in Newport, but it makes no mention of silverwork. Is the Inn gilding (silvering?) the lily here?

I think you may be right about the inn gilding the lily. I checked A Directory of Rhode Island Silversmiths and found no entry for Fludder. Wonder where the inn got their info.

The folks at the Inn don't seem to know much about it, but I gather they are fairly new owners. It does show the prestige of silversmiths -- being the owner of a prosperous three-generation masonry firm isn't considered tony enough for advertising purposes.
