Another from the Smaug hoard that brings up something I have wondered about before.

I do not recognize the mark, but the form would indicate a Philadelphia origin, c 1830 or so. What interests me is the striated background to the mark. I have seen this before, always on pieces presumed or identified as from that city. The mark of Thomas Fletcher comes to mind.

Does anyone recognize this maker; was he indeed working there? Is this a city specific motif? Has anyone seen a mark, known to be from another city, that has it? Does this perhaps indicate a specific die sinker (or type foundry?) that made punches for various smiths?

In one of my Philadelphia references there are two Phillips mentioned smile (but no marks frown ):
  • James Phillips; Jeweler, Directory listing 1846
  • John W. Phillips; Jeweler, Directory listings 1842-1850

I hope this provides some clue.

Hello,

I have a dessert spoon by Charles Louis Boehme that has a similar mark (small diagonal striations sloping to the right), and your spoon is of a form also often seen in Baltimore. On that basis I would guess there is a good chance the maker had a Baltimore connection. But then perhaps this is just a coincidence. Here's the Boehme spoon and mark:

Not to say that similarly hatched punches had not been used elsewhere, but it is intriguing to speculate upon the possibility of such a connection in this case. There was a close association between Philadelphia and Baltimore during the assay office period, with much Philadelphia silver being supplied for resale to Baltimore silversmiths to avoid the high taxes on locally made silver. Hatched punches were also used by Andrew Osthoff, Boeheme's apprentice, both in Baltimore and Pittsburgh, and in Pittsburgh by Joseph Lukey (Lucky), Osthoff's apprentice and successor. There may be others, but that's all that come to mind at the moment.
