Here is a mystery coin silver trademark I have been unable to identify. Marks such as these have been linked to a number of coin silver manufacturers, like Albert Coles. It is generally accepted these days that these are real trademarks, not just pseudo-hallmarks intended to fool the buyer. Many of the marks include an initial, or pair of intiials, which identify the name of the manufacturer. That said, it is logical to conclude that this trademark belongs to someone with the initials of I or J G, probably from New York. So who could it be? My best guess is Jeremiah Gomph of Utica. A different set of marks is attributed to Gomph by Don Soeffing in a recent issue of Silver magazine, but perhaps he used the mark in question before he was joined in business by his brother. This is only a guess, though. Has anyone else seen this mark before, especially accompanied by a retailer's or other mark? Any other ideas who it might be? Brent IP: Logged |

A spoon with this mark was recently listed on ebay, attributed by the seller (no named source)to a Pittsburgh manufacturer, c.1850 or later. I don't seem to have saved a printout -- it may have been Isaac Garrison who worked in Pgh at that period, but I cannot confirm this. I have seen this mark discussed/questioned before, but never that attribution. If it is of Pittsburgh origin, I would like to know on what authority/evidence the attribution has be made. I have just gotten a spoon with this mark and that of James R. Reed, a well established Pittsburgh silversmith (first) and retailer (later), so it would seem there is a Pittsburgh coonnection. I also have one (gotten since the last posting) marked I.GARRISON that does not carry the IG trade mark. If indeed the trade mark is Garrison's, this spoon could have been made before the trade mark was adopted, or the trade mark could have been used only on wholesaled silver.
