Here is a real puzzle. This pair of candlesticks obviously French in style have a strong Missouri provenance by the early 19th century. I am reasonably certain they are American in the broadest sense of the word (French colonial), in any case the marks are not in any European book I know of, and several very knowledgeable experts on the continent have said the same. I would be curious if anyone has ever seen anything like them. IP: Logged |

A beautiful set of sticks. The ASV mark certainly looks Parisian -- a member of the Vachette family, perhaps? Have you done any research on the crests? IP: Logged |

The crests are supposedly those of Felix Vallee and his wife. Who owned them at one point but were probably not the original owners. I don't believe they are real coats-of-arm, they look like something made up, not uncommon on French silver. The marks wouldn't be Parisian because they lack the two points always found on Paris marks. Also I have almost all provincial French books, and no French marks really even look similar. The IG mark for example is really much larger than any French continental mark I know of. IP: Logged |

It's possible that they are early French-Canadian. I was saw a book on marks for same but it's hard to come by, but they do look similar to the French marks. IP: Logged |
