This mystery piece is certainly French and I think was made in Pont-a-Mousson in the 3rd quarter or so of the 18th century. It weighs 8.5 oz but I think it might be less than coin grade. Anyone have any thoughts on the maker, etc. I have no references on Fr. silver except the little bit in Wyler. I wonder if it was for stews or heavy foods rather than punch?? Thanks for any help.

Certainly looks French provincial, probably mid-late 18th, though it's hard to make out the marks. A ladle like this would have been used for soups and stews. (The French weren't punch-drinkers like the English.) I have an identically formed ladle (marked in Marseilles, 1809-1819) and in fact used it this afternoon to serve an Italian cioppino (seafood stew). Given its origin, perhaps I should have made bouillabaisse! IP: Logged |

To identify the maker I would need to see a better picture or get a description of the letters on it. Without giving a long treatise on French provincial marks the mark is probably from Pont-A-Mousson. The quality of the silver is given by the mark. If there is an eagle above, it would be higher standard, and if the croix de Lorraine is above (as I guess on this one) the quality would be 9 dernier 12 grains. below the initials is a heart the symbol of Pont-A-Moussson (which is the only thing I can really make out). In between the two symbols there should be two or three initials of the maker, none of which I can make out. The O leaf V mark is the owners initials which in France are often stamped in, especially when expense is a problem. IP: Logged |
