I am in need of information concerning the careers of A. Fairleigh and J. R. Gardner. Gardner may have been the son of Jn. Gardner, also a smith. IP: Logged |

Andrew Fairleigh was born in 1808 in Elizabethtown to Andrew and Letetia (Swan) Fairleigh. He was working as silversmith at least as early as 1830 there, but I have not found anything more specific. He married Jane Talbot of that city about 1843 and moved to Savannah MO in 1845, remaining a year before moving again to St Joseph. In 1849 he moved again, this time to Sacramento CA where he established a silver and jeweler business. After several years of good business, he built a store of his own, but died just after its opening. His wife sold the business and with her two daughters opened a hotel. Through his mother's line he was directly related to the Dubois family of silversmiths in New York. IP: Logged |

I've dug a bit and the only maker I have found named Gardner working in Elizabethtown is David Holmes Gardner, born 29 July 1825, son of Senator James Jefferson and Elizabeth (Spur) Gardner. He apparantly spent his whole life there, dying on 1 May 1882. This is the D. H. Gardner noted in Silversmiths of Kentucky (Boultinghouse) as a silversmith suffering $500 in losses from the fire that swept the town in 1869. As with Andrew Fairleigh, I find nothing on partnerships or associations. IP: Logged |

William Fairleigh and Milton Tootle married the sisters Alice and Caroline O'Neill. The partnership of TOOTLE & FAIRLEIGH, dry goods merchants, ran from 1850 to 1873. Fairleigh withdrew his interest, traveled the world until 1879, then returned to St. Joseph and formed another dry goods company, BAILEY, FAIRLEIGH, & WEIL. IP: Logged |

Your right; I read too much into a census that looked like William G was in the company of at least one jeweler, and it was not unusual for hardware merchants to sell notions and fancy goods. Tootle, Fairleigh and company ended owners in a mill and shipped goods around the country. William stopped working when he fell ill according to the sketch I'm reading, and didn't apply for a passport until 1878, that I can confirm. William, it seems did quite bit more in his business career. IP: Logged |
