When I bought this I presumed it was William Gilbert N.Y. c. 1775. Now while I am looking at it, I thought maybe I should check and see if that's right. It is a full sized ladle very heavy for the size fo the bowl, 6.5 troy oz. I looked in Elegant Plate and they didn't have a picture of the mark. The double drop would help if the people who put out books would ever picture the back. I know double drops are found in NY. Is anyone certain this is the right Gilbert? IP: Logged |

Checking in the Darling Foundation book of New York Silversmiths, this mark does not look like any attributed to William W Gilbert. His marks were in script. The mark looks very similar to the mark of Philo B. Gilbert of New York City working during 1839-1844. Though the letters in the Darling book seem further spread apart. There are two other NY silversmiths with the surname Gilbert: Henry and John C. both working during the mid 19th century. No marks are show for these makers. Fred IP: Logged |

Currier documents a William Gilbert mark as block letters in a rectangle and it shows a distinct serif at the end of the G. The mark on your spoon does not appear to be a documented mark for this Gilbert. The style of the ladle does not seem to be current with the time period of Philo Gilbert. Your ladle looks to be of an earlier style. Fred IP: Logged |
