There is an interesting piece by Asa Blanchard now up on eBay (2541939525).

The seller describes it as a marrow spoon, but it looks more like something a pharmacist might use for scooping pills (whatever that might be called). It is hard to tell from the images, but it seems like it may have started life as a place spoon that was then remade at some point to fit the need. The placement of the mark looks rather cramped, but a narrowing of the handle would account for that. On the other hand, it may just be a very rare form and a real prize for the lucky winner.

I have only seem one other similar piece, a coffin end by Ebenezer Moulton in the Boston Museum collection that Kathryn Buhler calls a toddy spoon, a term she admits she has never seen in inventories.

Opinions, anyone?

Apothecary spoon was the term I suggested, for reaching into apothecary jars or vials to retrieve medicines or chemicals. It could have a measured capacity for mixing or dosing. It seems too long and flimsy for much else.

I have seen condiment spoons/ladles with more or less elongate bowls, but they are bent at the junction of the stem and bowl.

How would a toddy spoon be used, anyway?
