I acquired a coin silver soup ladle, 10 1/2" long, bowl 3 7/8" x 3 1/8", about 7 troy ounces, and all seems fairly straight forward, except that I'd like to better determine the date of manufacture. The maker's mark is below:
Per my Ensko IV, Newell Harding of Boston used an incuse "N. HARDING" mark beginning 1822, followed by other incuse variants, and then an "N. HARDING & CO * COIN" incised mark appeared beginning 1842, though the business had been sold to Ward & Rich in 1832. This would lead me to guess about 1840 or so, except that the handle shape appears to be later (it is like the Old English Pattern, tipt on the underside end, but with much more swelling or flaring out at the upper end, a style which seems to have been in favor more around the 1870-80 or so aesthetic era). Any opinions? Thanks! Rick IP: Logged |

I have no idea where Ensko came up with the sale to Ward & Rich -- no one else (that I have seen) cites it. Harding, with partner Louis Kimball, continued making spoons in his Court Street factory until his death in 1862. The firm was continued after that by his three sons, who continued to use the old N. HARDING & Co. mark, until the mid 1870s. Without some provenence, it would be very difficult to date a piece from the firm. IP: Logged |

Thanks, wev, for your input. I was hoping that someone had info not contained in Ensko on this particular Harding mark. I suppose I'll have to go with the handle style and your info on the Harding business and place it in the early 1870s. Thanks again! IP: Logged |
