I have a coin silver ladle attributed to Isaac Hutton of Albany, NY. The handle is monogrammed “ATE” and is inscribed “Catharine Persin consort to M. Persin. Died 3 rd Jany. 1797 Aged 49 Yrs”. Length 15.3 inches, width across bowl 3.9 inches; weight 7.5 troy oz. Marked Hutton, Albany. An article, from 1964 catalog published by the Albany Institute of Silver, was some spoons inscribed similar to my ladle. The article identified the spoons as funeral spoons. Can anyone tell me if my ladle is a funeral ladle? Also what is the custom of giving funeral spoons. Who gave them? Who received them? Were they given to the deceased’s spouse? IP: Logged |

Presentation of inscribed spoons to participants in funerals was a common practice in Europe in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries. The custom was followed in New York among members of the Dutch community in New York City and Albany. Another such spoon by Hutton was sold on ebay this week. An object other than a spoon is uncommon - your ladle is undoubtedly of considerable interest. [This message has been edited by swarter (edited 10-14-2003).] IP: Logged |

The practice may still be alive in Scandinavia. Early this year on another forum someone described such a spoon commemorating a man who presumably died in 1976. It was inscribed "name 1876 - 1976" and bore the proper marks for that year for Sweden. The dimensions were: bowl 3 11/16" by 2 5/8", handle 5" by 3/4". IP: Logged |

Although on a less morbid note, Ag(um)entum's spoon may just be the happy commemoration of someone's 100th birthday? IP: Logged |

A reasonable suggestion, Patrick. I remember spending quite a bit of time translating and interpreting a brief inscription in Swedish (which I don't speak) and concluding with some confidence that it was a memorial spoon. I may have been wrong but I doubt it. IP: Logged |

And here I thought that all the dated pieces i have collected over the yeras have been based on aniversities and such... I will now have to go back and review them with a calculator to see what the variations may be... "Smaug" IP: Logged |

For those interested in the topic, I made post about a German memorial fork in the Continental Silver Forum. IP: Logged |
