I've found this maker listed in my book of old silver, but my library is sorely lacking and i cannot find any info online anywhere as of yet. Would anyone be so kind as to let me know where i might be able to find out if the spoon i just purchased is of interest to collectors? Many thanks. IP: Logged |

Assuming you mean W. M. (Washington Mcdonough) Root, you can find some basic information here: Washington Mcdonough Root As for its interest to collectors, that is a mystery I can not resolve. IP: Logged |

This is a good example for just how great WEV's American Silversmith Genealogy is. If you haven't poked around American Silversmith Genealogy, I suggest you add it to your Favorites/Bookmarks. IP: Logged |

Stephen Ensko (1948) lists a W. M. Root of Pittsfield, Mass. active around 1840. But he also lists a W. N. Root and Brother of New Haven, Conn. circa 1850. Is this an error? IP: Logged |

Yes, New Haven is wrong. W. M. ROOT & BROTHER (Washington Mcdonough and either Laurence Mattoon or Aurelius Clark Root) are listed in the 1856 New England Buisiness Directory working at Pittsfield MA. IP: Logged |

In 1873 Washington M Root and his son Wellington S Root were jewelers using the name Root & Son at 18 N, Pittsfield, Massachusetts. W M Root married Charlotte Hubbard in Chester, Massachusetts on 25 April 1846. IP: Logged |
